Chronic pain and depression.

Can depression and/or anxiety manifest itself through chronic leg pain?

  • Ive been suffering from leg pain for the past 2 years. Its kept me from sleeping and dramatically altered my quality of life. Since no doctors can find physical reasons for my pain i am curious if compartmentalized trauma or anxiety or depression can cause chronic pain.

  • Answer:

YES!!   From WebMD: Most of us know about the emotional symptoms of depression. But you may not know that depression can be associated with many physical symptoms, too. In fact, many people with depression suffer from chronic pain or other physical symptoms. These include: [...] Muscle aches and joint pain. Depression can make any kind of chronic pain worse. [...] Sleeping problems. Many people with depression can't sleep well anymore. They wake up too early or can't fall asleep when they go to bed. Others sleep much more than normal. - http://www.webmd.com/depression/physical-symptoms   Please seek out a proper medical professional.

If the depression is not being caused by a chemical imbalance but merely a choice to a have a sour outlook on life then it is absolutely plausible that you could be suffering from psychosomatic leg pain as a result of this "depression."
