  • Answer:

Posture reallignment classes such as Alexander technique may be very beneficial for you...massage therapy can be very helpful for a lot of spinal problems too. Also, pilates and yoga are wonderful for developing balance, but in your case I would be very careful and seek out a very well reputed instructor.

Your posture has an effect on your riding. If your scoliosis is such that it has produced a permanent change in what would be considered to be "normal" posture, it is absolutely possible that your riding can be effected. You did not mention your age because when you "stop growing", when you reach skeletal maturity, your scoliosis will not continue to change. It will be in its permanently fixed position. While I would not presume to offer you medical advice, I will share with you my personal experiences with several cases of scoliosis that responded extremely well to chiropractic care coupled with therapeutic massage therapy. One particular case was that of an 11 year old girl (lived in Pennsylvania) who was an avid scoccer player. She was under care with an orthopedic physician but other than monitoring her condition and bracing, they had little to offer her. Once she was under appropriate chiropractic care, she was able to stop using her brace, her pain greatly diminished, her ability to play greatly improved, and her posture was significantly improved as well. X-rays were taken every 3 months and after beginning chiropractic care, her curvature was no longer progressing. It had actually improved by 2% and I know this doesn't sound like much literally, but it was phenomenal in fact. I also had another two cases of young people in Georgia that was successful but I won't bore you with more of the same. With proper chiropractic care, you could possibly have everything to gain and nothing to lose. You and your horse should be like "one unit", if you catch my drift. What you do effects what she can do. To what extent, that is impossible to determine. As I said, I know many who have had significant improvement with chiropractic care and I know of no one who has had a negative response and I can only speak to my personal experiences. I am so sorry you are having such difficulties and I hope you can find someone with the knowledge and ability to help you. Too bad you are not in my area so I could refer you to some of the best physicians I know. Take care and ride safe.

Please ignore the idiotic first answer. Good for you that you continue to ride! There is an association called the para olympics. They may have some answers. Is there a theraputic riding center to help you acquire the balance you are looking for? My back hurts every day too. When I ride, becasue of my poor position it is even worse. I ourchased a $200 inversion table at ***** Sporting Goods. Its awesome and when I tip upside down on it (about 30degree incline) i can feel the muscles gently stretch back to how they are supposed to be. i use that thing 2 times a day. without it...many mornings i can not even stand up straight! Talk to your doctor about it. it is a very gentle therapy!
