How can I play the Alto Saxophone louder with a good sound?

How do you make a saxophone sound nice?

  • This may seem like a stupid question, but I'm learning the alto saxophone, but all the notes I play sound harsh. Is there anything I can do to make it sound more mellow? ...show more

  • Answer:

The saxophone needs the most rounded embouchure/mouth formation of the woodwind family. Think more "o". Also, try and "open up" the inside of your mouth. Relax your jaw (tilt your head toward the ceiling and let your jaw drop to ease the tension). Try yawning before you play and remember how open the inside of your mouth was while yawning. If all else fails, perhaps you need a different reed. I like the Rico Royal 2 1/2s. Happy playing! :-)

practice, practice, practice. i taught myself how to play the alto a few years ago and i used to have this problem as well. the more you practice, it will become easier and more natural.

did you grease it? Do you play well? How cold is it in your playing area?
