Are there any good bebop jazz bands?

With the changing face of Jazz bands, which CURRENT bands most closely resemble bands of the Jazz Era?

  • By Jazz era, I really mean the era of the Big Bands.

  • Answer:

I don't know of any by name. I have heard gig announcements from Phil Schapp, of WKCR, regarding jazz era sounding bands. I remember the gigs mostly taking place in hotel and museum clubs/performing stages. Also, they were are weekly gigs, mostly on Mondays or other weekday nights. The venues were uptown, I think in Harlem. Sorry, I can't be more specific. Call Phil Schapp, at WKCR he will be happy to spread the news, and he knows ALL of it. I think that jazz era bands will die out. I have respect for the era, but I don't imagine to many young people listen to it. I hope they do. Perhaps the scene will survive on a small and sincere way. I think that the progressive jazz scene has a good chance of survival, also on a small and sincere way. The nature of progressive jazz is to reinvent itself, therefore never becoming dated, hopefully. Oh yeah, I'm talking about New York City.
