How can I get that really jazzy sound on my alto?

How do you get that specific sound for alto saxophone?

  • I can't get it and I practice every single day for an hour. What am I doing wrong?

  • Answer:

Hi Mari: The FIRST thing you need to have is a concept of the sound you want in your head. (Then the task is to get it out.) All the factors that result in your sound are: the horn itself, the mouthpiece, the reed, and your oral cavity. These are many variables, I know, but then you have to change them around and see what you come up with. It is a time consuming thing, so be patient.
