Does this look like a Brown Recluse Spider bite to you?

  • Answer:

Even if you are in recluse territory, (south central US) these symptoms are far too severe and quick to be a recluse bite. generally it would take weeks, with lack of any treatment, for a secondary injury to reach this extreme. the symptoms do sound like a possible staph infection or MRSA. my suggestion is to follow the doctors advice for treating this. if treatment is not responding, you should notify your doctor, or as someone suggested, consult a different physician. a side note: 95% of recluse bites heal very nicely on their own.

Yes it does look like a brown recluse spider bite. 1. He didn't feel it. 2. It turned black. 3. His ear swelled up. Take him to another nearby ER. They might say something like, "The only way we can know if you got bit by a brown recluse spider is if you have the spider with you in a jar or something." You should demand that the venom be extracted and tested or just plain extracted and if you want, even get stitches.

I Sometimes Yes

It does look like a spider bite, but whether or not it was a brown recluse is difficult to know. However, for both brown recluses and black widow spider bites they generally treat you with an antibiotic and they tell you to take Benadryl. If it pusses, swells out more than an inch, or gets worse, get back to the doctor immediately. I've been bit by a black widow on multiple occassions, it looked worse than that though. One time, I had to go on steroids the reaction was so bad for almost a month.

It looks bad, but the pictures of bites I've seen tend to be worse...the poison literally eats away at your skin and flesh. Usually the damaged area tends to be bigger. Luckily, it was behind his ear. If it was, say, on his stomach, it might break through to internal organs and cause big problems. Obviously the antibiotics won't work on the bite.

By all means get a second opinion. If you don't feel totally comfortable with the care you received, you should see another doctor.
