Physical Therapy is an excellent field of study because there will always be a need for this type of service particularly among the elderly population; however, when it comes to salary it will depend entirely on where you live, if the area where you live has an overflow of physical therapists, and the extensive services available at the closest hospital in addition to the number of orthopedic surgeons in the area. The best thing you can do as you come closer to your graduation date is make an appointment with student services. Discuss your concerns over salary. Mention the concerns you have about paying back student loans. This is important; defaulting on a student loan can follow you around for many years ruining your credit score. Ask for someone in student affairs that is knowledgeable regarding where the greatest need for physical therapists exist and how to go about sending out resumes along with letters of recommendations from your instructors, any volunteer facilities you worked with while in college, and prominent people within the community. My oldest is actually considering returning to college to obtain her physical therapy degree; however, she might have problems with this field because of a pre-existing condition from a car wreck after a truck t-boned her in the driver's side door causing her to break her coccyx bone and fracture her hip. As soon as she can get on the facility's insurance where she works, she plans to visit an orthopedic specialist to find out if there are any procedures to lessen the pain and correct the problems. Without it, she will have a difficult time finding work as a PT regardless of how much she enjoys it. She often helps the PT at the respite care facility where she works. Her attitude about working out gives the residents extra incentive to work as hard as she does, which is why she is considering the change in fields. :) These people are like family. She often brings me by when she needs to pick up her schedule. The residents are always complimenting me for raising such a caring, well-mannered, and hard-working young woman. You might want to check the website http://www.fastweb.com. This was one of the websites my daughter frequented her last year or two of high school and her first year in college. It is possible there is an area within the website that gives information you are seeking; however, remember that your best bet for updated answers will be with someone from your student services and/or student affairs department. Best of luck.
