  There are two routes to becoming a nurse practitioner. The first, and most common, route is to earn undergraduate degree in nursing, obtain licensure as a registered nurse through the National Council Licensure Examination - Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), and then earn a master's degree in nursing. The second route is for holders of a bachelor's degree who are not registered nurses. A few specialized programs offer this option, which includes training students to be nurses at the same time as they fulfill the requirements established by the nurse practitioner certification boards. Regardless of the chosen route, students who wish to begin a nurse practitioner master's program must successfully pass the NCLEX-RN. Some students who opt for associate's degrees in nursing may be required to go on to complete their bachelor's degree before they continue into a nurse practitioner program. Registered nurses and NPs must graduate from nursing programs at accredited colleges and universities.
