Is it possible to be a part-time surgeon?

Is it possible to become a surgeon from an RN position?

  • What are the steps, if possible, to make the transition from an RN to a surgeon? Is there any website I could reference? Thank you for your help!

  • Answer:

An RN would return to school and complete all the PreMed requirements. If the RN doesn't have a Bachelor's degree, it is highly recommended to complete one. The RN would take the MCAT and apply to the med schools of his choice. The student would complete 4 years of Med School. During the last year of Med School, the student would start looking into Residency programs. After Med School, the physician would complete a residency and optional fellowship (3-10 years). There aren't any RN to MD bridge programs. An RN would need to go through all the same steps as any other student.

It is like going to New York from Los Angeles and make a long, long stop in Mexico City. Nursing school does not have enough high level math nor science classes. You will start over again. Years and years and years of school. If you want to be a surgeon - then go to medical school directly. Don't take up a space in nursing school - people are on waiting lists for that.

Only by starting a medical degree to become qualified as a doctor, then doing the further training to become a surgeon. The only help would be that an RN would have some preknowledge and experience that would be helpful during the course, but there are no short cuts.
