What is it like working as an LPN?

  • I'm considering going back to school to get my LPN and later on my RN. What is it like working as an LPN? What environments can I work in? What's a typical day like? What is ...show more

  • Answer:

It really depends on the individual nurse. You decide how your day will go. Working in a hospital, i have come across snotty nurses, polite nurses, know everything by the book nurses, and the caring ones. Working hospital security, I have been to calls were the patient attacked staff, ran away or just can't stand the nurse. After talking to the patient, it was discovered that either the nurse forgot the medication, the nurse ignored the patient, the patient was treated like a baby or criminal or the patient was promised something by the nurse that wasn't realistic. So i just suggest that you be yourself. Check on the patient and know something about them. KNOW THEIR FIRST NAME. so many time I make a report and the nurse has to look in the chart for the patient's name. Don't lose their glasses or dentures!!! Our security department collect about 60 pairs of glasses and 30+ set of dentures a year!! If a test will take an hour tell them don't say 15 minutes. Don't be late with food or medications. These suggestions may sound demanding but it is part of the job this is why you get the big bucks and drive a nice car and make out with doctors in the stairwell!!. Ok lol I'm giving up too much information. Just be yourself and treat them like a mother or father. I think you will be fine since you are asking this question. good luck!

I am a CNA and took a course to become an LPN. I withdrew because I realized that I wouldn't like being a nurse. I don't like blood, open wounds, or needles. Much of the work has to do with that. There is also a lot of paperwork, and pill passing. LPNs do much of what CNAs do. In most facilities they give bed baths, put people on bed pans, etc. A lot of lifting of patients is involved too so you have to have a good back. On the positive side you may save some life's, or at lest prolong life's. There is a need for LPNs, and the pay is decent. Personally I think they should get paid more. Some LPNs don't make much more then CNAs. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. The "median annual earnings of licensed practical nurses were $36,550 in May 2006." Read the link for more info. See the second link for comments on a typical day of an LPN.

im thinking of this field too... I know many people in the medical field (im filipino) not trying to reinforce asian stereotypes but anyway. But they do make good money thats true.

Depends on your personality if you like working in a hospital or a medical office or doing private duty in a hospital or in a person's home. The pay rate varies by state and place of employment. I worked for a registry as an LVN (LPN to you) and made 35.00 an hour. But I would think around 20.00/hr. Call around and ask the employment/personnel office at the hospitals in your area or check the classifieds. One thing, nurses will always have jobs. that license is worth gold!!
