Hold off on Denali until you know what you are doing. Your budget might get you there to take a picture and back... How are you going to get there? AK is a big place, you can't just fly in to Anchorage and get a cheap cab to Denali. You are probably going to die if you aren't familiar with technical climbing and glacial travel. Why not live a little an hone your skills before commuting suicide?

When you see that a guided trip up Mount McKinley-Denali costs $7,000, there must be a reason. You cannot safely hike up Mount McKinley-Denali alone. Unlike the Colorado Fourteeners, you cannot hike up Mount McKinley-Denali is less than two weeks. The weather is horrible. About one percent of all attempts result in death. You must cross dangerous ice fields. A slip does not mean falling and hitting your knee. A slip means sliding a thousand feet to your death.

I use to read on Denali and other climbing books. Eiger Dreams has a section on it, I think. There is a book written by some girl who climbed it, in the 90's, maybe the 80's, can't recall it though. They tell you all about it. I hear you have to sit through a film to see what can happen up there before you are allowed to go. It's not pretty. Don't mean to scare you, but it can get crazy and dangerous up there. It's not 14K, It's 20K. Big difference. Read on it before you go. You'll need everything, along with luck and good weather. One book talks of the guys up there in the ice cave during a storm. Singing the theme to "Gilligan's Island". She chose to stay outside in the storm. Read the books before you go. Good Luck. ADDED: I think the other book is called "Facing the Extreme" by Ruth Anne Kocour. She'll give you an idea what it is like.
