Tips for Hamster care?
-
I'm about to get a hamster and was in need of some tips for taking care of one.

Answer:
Items needed: Wheel Small animal cage Water bottle / water bowl (i prefer the bowls) Food dish Hamster food and treats Bedding And Also, if you're bringing homw, pick up a "Dry Tail" medicine for it. Hamsters tend to develop this illness called "Wet tail" its nothing too bad really, but the hamster gets a bit stressed from moving from the store to a new home, get this med. for it, that way if it whos signs, you'll be ready to treat him. :) Care tips: Shred carrot over its food every now and then. This helps make sure the hamster keeps a balanced diet, and gives it added vitamins. Dont bath the hamster. This can cause ilness so fast for it. hamsters tend to be pretty clean, just make sure the bedding is changed every 2-3 times a week, and it should be fine. Brushing is not necessary, they have minimal fur, and are very neat, they clean their fur themselves, so its all good. The wheel: Make sure to remove it from the cage at night. Hamsters are nocturnal, and they get energy bursts at night time, you can leave the wheel in, but it may wake you up or disrupt your sleep. Also, if your getting more then 1, dont put them in the same cage, they will fight and do harm to one another. Give your hamster a bit of time in its new cage, like a whole day or two. Dont take it out and hold him right away, let him get used to the new environment and such. After about 4 or 5 days, you should be able to carry your hamster around :D Hope this helps ^_^

First off, make sure it's a boy. Hamsters from a pet store that are female typically end up pregnant while inside the pet store without knowing it, and that's a problem because when hamsters are scared they will EAT THEIR YOUNG. Ouch. You'll also want to make sure the hamster is nice, meaning that you'll want to handle it in the pet shop if possible. If it bites, you'll probably not want it. If not, then it likes you. Another note is that you should ask the pet shop worker what breeds there are and the traits of those breeds. You'll find one that's the best for you. Second, you'll probably want to get it a nice cage with a hamster wheel, a source of food and water, and bedding. They love to burrow. You'll want to change the bedding ever once and a while to avoid it from getting dirty. You'll also want to clean the hamster's cage every month or so. Do so by taking the hamster out of it's cage and putting it in a hamster ball or a place that's concealed. Hamsters love to run around and can find a way out of anything. Then, empty the bedding out, scrub it down, and dry. Put in new bedding and food/water if needed. Third, give it fresh food occasionally. I'm unsure what foods are safe for hamsters to eat, but I'm pretty sure carrots and lettuce are okay. You'll probably want to look that up on your own. Be prepared to not go to sleep at night as hamsters are awake during the night and sleep at daylight. During the day, you'll probably have little or no actions from the hamster but at night you'll be hearing it run on it's wheel all through the night. Keep an eye on your hamster. It is crucial that you do so. If a hamster escapes, then you're doomed. There is the chance that you will find it, but you may not... or find it too late. Also, only have one hamster at a time. Hamsters tend to fight with each other, and a male and a female hamster will make babies. And when they do have babies, the male will eat the babies if it can and the female hamster will eat them if scared. Finally, you'll want to spend some time with your hamster. Maybe an hour or so each day out of the cage. You'll want to start out on the first day avoiding to man handle it and only give it food. After a while, you can pick it up and put it in it's hamster ball, or just hold it in your hands. Careful, they excrete waste a lot. Before and after handling a hamster, wash your hands. If your hands smell like food, the hamster will think that it is and nibble on your finger. And of course, washing your hands after is sanitary. Also, avoid squeezing the hamster. Pick it up gently with one hand, then cup your hands together as if you were getting a drink from a lake and hold it, putting up fingers as a barrier. No matter what, you will get bitten ever once and a while. Usually, it's just a nibble, but if it gets irritated or infected contact a doctor right away. I hope that helps.

Dwarf hammy can be caged together but Syrian can't. Syrian are easier to take care of but dwarf are more sociable. If u are adopting one, I recommend u to pick Syrian. Wheel, water bottle, chew toy(toilet roll) and wheel are a must. Extra toys are a bonus marks for ur hamster to like you. If you don't like the smell of a hamster, buy a sand bath. Taming it may be hard cos it would bite you occasionally. Start with gloves and put box below the place you carry it. Remember to prepare vet care for it, if you can't provide vet care, don't adopt it. Good luck with ur hamster. :D

make sure when you get it from the store you have something more than the box to bring it home. When I bought mine he chewed through the bottom before I even had it in the car. they are really easy though plenty of food and water. I suggest a ball to give it exercise. we have a kitten that chases it through the house! lol

if the mom ever gets pregnant make sure you separate the dad because they eat their own babies. Other than that just make sure you keep them and the cage every now and then and keep the food stock full and same goes for the water.
