You should start in karts, most successful drivers start very young. I only know it from the UK set up but usually if you're going to start racing in the lower formulas you need to be able to bring some serious money and/or sponsorship with you. One thing you really need to know - there's a LOT more to racing than driving fast. Also, if you're doing that on a public road you're likely to end up dead (or in prison) before you ever get a chance to race. When I first started racing the first thing that was drummed into my head was that you can't win if you don't finish! Your first move should be to book yourself a driving experience day at a track near you and see if you've really got what it takes.

You should start with karts or autocrossing. This is invaluable for learning handling and acceleration. Also, get into the SCCA, go to their driver schools. http://www.scca.org/home.aspx

Auto racing is very hard to get started in. It is usually who you know not what you know . If your not from a racing family it's even harder. Every one I know that races cars bought their first car. And advanced from there. I have been in racing for 35 years racing both motorcycles & go karts .I have never been ask to drive a car for anyone.My grandson now drives for me in go karts . he's18 now and has raced for 8 years, he's one of the best drivers in Indiana,but without a break he will probily be racing go karts until he's my age. If you have the money build your self a streetstock and run your local track. If you get good enough you will be noticed, move on from there. I dont know if go kart racing is popular in your area but this is the cheapest form of racing .And it's real racing. To reach the top in go karts is tough.We run dirt track oval.Very competive. Racing is the same at all levels , the thrill you get from racing is like a drug you get hooked on it. Hang out at your local track , meet people, ask questions,if you realy want race you can.
