It is not called a 'Vice Prime Minister'. The position is called a Deputy Prime Minister. It is not, however, a constitutional position, so the Prime Minister in power can choose to either have one or not. Manmohan Singh did not have one either, and now neither does Modi. It is a pretty redundant position, actually, considering that the executive gets plenty of help from the civil servants. Modi also has trust issues seeing that his Cabinet is smaller than those had by previous governments. So he might have wanted to avoid another guy hovering around him.

We have had this post at times. Advani was Dy PM in NDA-1. I am not too sure, but I think Devi Lal was Dy PM in the V.P. Singh (thankfully short life) government.

The post of President and Vice President are as per the constitution of India but the post of Dy. PM and Dy. CM have not been denied in the constitution. India previously had Dy. PM also during Janta Party rule. Some states previously also had Dy. CM in the states also. So we Dy. PM and Dy. CM can be appointed if needed by the leader of the ruling party. Sometimes when a single party do not have full majority, it joins hands with the other party to get majority, then they go for this post to appease the supporting party or parties.

Deputy PM and deputy CM are not constitutional positions but are generally used by PM and CM to adjust somebody who is threat to his government if not accomodated. But the lesser the positions the better it is. Even the posts of Vice President and governors, Lt governors of states should be removed. They donĂ¢€™t have much work to do and are a burden on indian people theire spendings accumulate to about thousand of crores. Even i feel President also should live austerely, why he is living in a palace made by the british for their viceroy. When british ruled over undivided india they wanted to show the position of viceroy senior to any other king of india thus made a magnificent viceroy house but the shameless congress presidents used it as rashtrapati bhavan after independence although they did drama of using khaddar prior to independence. Why spend hundreds of crores in a year for head of the democratic state when crores are homeless in our nation?

We don't have this post because this is not constitutional. It just depends on PM whether he wants to appoint anyone on this post or not.Sardar Patel was our first deputy prime minister. He was appointed on this post because he was very dependable according to Nehru.Same as Charan singh was also deputy PM in ministry of Morarji Desai. They both wanted to get the office of PM but Morarji Desai became able to be PM and Charan Singh was appointed deputy PM.Jagjivan Ram was also deputy PM in ministry of Morarji Desai. Hence it is not permanent office, it is up to PM.

It is not a constitutional imperative to have a Deputy Prime Minister. However,on occasions there have been Dy. PMs in India as a means of political compromise and adjustment. Sardar Patel was a deputy to Nehru and it took care of the two power centres. Morarji Desai was a deputy PM to Indira Gandhi but his ambitions grew big. Charan Singh was Morarji's deputy and he wrecked the Janta party. L K Advani as the deputy to Atalji was the only worthy Deputy PM. Deputy PMs have been a thorn in the flesh of PMs and the post itself appears superfluous

Who says there is not?? India has witnessed 7 Deputy PM's so far. Though this post is not permanent and is not a constitutional office either. Sardar Vallabhai Patel was the 1st Deputy Prime Minister of India. L.K. Advani served as the Deputy PM from 2002-04. No one has been appointed Deputy PM after him. This govt doesnt has a Deputy PM.

The post of deputy PM is created time and again to assist the PM in administrative functions. However, the post of the home minister is not very different from what you would call a deputy PM although there are some small differences.
