What is a game engine?

What is the best drag and drop visual game engine for kids (10 years)?

  • My 10 year old son started recently doing games with Kudo game lab (http://fuse.microsoft.com/page/kodu) which was a great starter for him. He likes to create virtual worlds, place characters in them and add game functions. But now he wants to place his own characters and to create bigger worlds (limits of Kudo engine). Which engine is the best? I've already looked into Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu/) but this is more 2D and he doesn't like the approach... What else does exist? (optionally: if created game could be published to the web/smartphones to share them with friends this would be great in the future - for now windows-only is "ok" ;-)

  • Answer:

I recommend Game Maker, by http://YoYo%20Games. Though it does take a little getting used to regardless of your age, I think that is true of any game maker. I started learning to design and develop websites when I was ten years old, so as long as the child has the drive, Game Maker should not be too difficult. Game Maker also has the ability to export to other formats, including web/smartphones, if you buy the paid versions.

He can start of with simpler game making engines such as Scratch or Tynker, both are fairly popular and good for making games. They're both used by many younger children. However, I personally love using Gamemaker: Studio, however it is more adcanced. You can use drag and drop, however if you want to do something more you can also code instead, however you don't have to. I've been using it since I around 14 years old.

How about something like construct classic. It's got an easy to use drag and drop interface and it's completely free. The only thing is it's a 2d game engine, but I really enjoyed using it! here's a link http://sourceforge.net/projects/construct/files/construct/Classic/ConstructClassic_r1-2.exe/download
