    i'm gonig to make it simple replace: -selector plate -cut off lever -selector switch given that your battery was fully charged and your motor has sufficient power to pull your spring, (which it seems to be, according to your descriptions) it's one (or more) of these possibilities.

This is a common problem with a lot of AEGs. If it is only an occasional problem, there is no issue at all, even marui guns occasionally have this happen. The remedy is exactly what you do- go to auto, then semi will be unjammed. If it is a constant problem, then I would consult someone who works with internals, I'm not much of an airsmith myself.

what brand is it? It might just be a crap brand..the piston could be stripped if you've fired it without ammo in it..or it could be jammed.
