  • Answer:

There isn't any cheap boat paint that will work on aluminium. Aluminium is best left natural for longest life, and easy problem location. Water can be acid or alkaline, it can be neutral too so if you use lakes of distilled water you will never have a problem. In fresh water you should use magnesium anodes. Lakes on glaciers are very pure. Nearly all lakes have some mineral and salt levels depending on what the water trickled through to get to the lake... Cars rust and rot without even going into lakes, just from rainwater and hundreds of miles from the sea. Normally you would repair any cracks/rivets etc. Acid clean the entire hull, flush, dry, etch prime the hull, prime coat if required, tape/mask as required, apply two pack as required using HVLP to achieve film buildup to specs. and clean off tape/masking etc. until finished. That is what a professional will do. If you don't like that answer then get some mis-tint exterior grade house paint semi gloss or gloss. Paint shops always have specials tables where they put the mistakes or rubbish they can't sell. Get cheap brushes. Put hull in sun until warm. Flail away. As bristles fall off it is O.K. - they only become deck grip or artistic flourishes. If hull leaks put heaps on in that area. It won't last long as a repair in the lake probably but it will guarantee to hold all rainwater for weeks if you forget to take the bung out. You can paint your boat the same as your house so it looks good in the yard. You can't combine oil based and water based paints. Re-coat whenever bored or seasonally - whichever comes first. Do not sook if you get problems under paint or if it bubbles off. It is a cheap paint job, expect it to peel and flake etc. It might stick, it might not - it's your call. You get what you pay for. It will not improve the value of the boat compared to a real professional job, and will complicate that option in the future.
