Why is Market Share so important?

Why is Android's market share in Europe much higher than in the US?

  • According to this article, US's Android market share is 55.1% compared to iPhone's 39.3%. In Spain for example, Android's market share is as high as 90.6% compared to iPhone's 5.3%. What are the reasons behind the differences? http://techcrunch.com/2013/09/30/kantar-with-android-and-even-windows-phone-inching-up-in-smartphone-sales-get-set-for-an-iphone-spike/

  • Answer:

Simple, phones that run Android are cheaper.  From my experience in Spain, everyone is crazy about the iPhone but few have hundreds of Euros to spend on a phone.  Additionally, they aren't glued to their phones all day like we are.  When I was there, people would often send texts to meet up at a cafe and talk to face to face.  This may be changing however, anyone from Spain care to enlighten us?

US citizens like to support US companies, so they're biased towards home-grown. Also, Apple presumably markets more heavily in the US.

The US is an Apple fanboy country. Also the carriers have influenced this decision.

Its far easier to manipulate and collude with network operators in USA rather than in the heavily regulated European Union. We seem to think that consumers should be protected from shady practices of businesses stifling competition.
