What is construction engineering?

What career options do you have after experience as a Project Manager in Engineering/Construction  Projects?

  • I am just looking at the opportunities in terms of career advancement in the same company or in a different company/industry after gaining experience managing big Engineering Projects.

  • Answer:

I'd say there's 3 options.... Development in same industry/different company in similar position Change industry/niche Advancement in present company The general path in the same company could be Project Manager - Project Director and then onto executive/board positions (e.g. CTO, CFO, COO, CEO).If you have done good work, but feel you either are not valued or rewarded in present company, or your advancement options are limited, then do not be afraid to try somewhere else - or go freelance :-)If you have Project Management training/certification, remember there's options to transfer your skills to another industry - e.g. Project Delivery or Implementation in telecoms or IT (which are generally far bigger industries - so more opportunities - and perhaps less specific technical training/experience than Construction. To illustrate the flexibility, I  started as Engineering Surveyor, Site Engineer, Site Agent, Civil Engineer (all in construction) then moved onto Project Management/Delivery/Implementation in telecoms (GSM/UMTS/3G) then later power generation and oil/gas.I've found all these positions without any formal PM qualifications, though it's clear having PMP, Prince 2, Primavera experience/certification would only increase opportunities.Good luck with your future :-)
