Can I put guppies in with my female betta? If I can how big does the tank need to be, for 3 or 4? What kind of fish can I put in with my male betta? (I know not guppies for him) ...show more

Answer:
I would advise you to get a 10 gallon tank at least. 3 or 4 gallons will give you many poor quality water issues. Female guppies are ok but males no way. A Male Betta will attack any other fish that has long colorful tail or fins. Male guppies would get killed in no time. From my experience you can get medium size tetras, zebra danios, mountain minnows, rainbow fish, etc. Peaceful fish that swim fast and that don't have long colorful fins. However, Bettas have different personalities, some will attack and kill ANY fish in the tank. There is no way to predict how they will behave.

Please do not listen to shadow weaver, he is talking out of his ****** to be quite frank. Bettas are very peaceful fish, and love human contact (i.e feeding them buy hand) I have a Male Betta and a Female Betta in the same tank, along with my male fancy guppies and their are no problems at all. The is this myth that bettas are killers and that you can't put anything else in the tank with them. Which is a load of *********. I've been keeping Male and Female Bettas for years and their has never been a problem with them being kept with other fish. My betta is in a 15 gallon and he is loving it! so go for a 10-15 gallon as he will be much more happy. The best tank mates for bettas are Corydoras, Guppies (yes you can have guppies with them), and moutain minnows.

Bettas should be ok with guppies. Cory Catfish are also great for bottom feeders with a betta. Bettas will tend to get picked on by fish that like to nip fins - they can't move very fast and so they can get bullied. A lot of tetras are semi agressive and will nip them, so just do your homework if you're thinking about a tetra.

Females should be fine with guppies. I would recommend at least a 10 gal tank for 3-4 guppies and a female betta but keep only male guppies because if you have females in the take they will quickly out breed the tank As far as with a male betta any peaceful non-nippy fish will be fine as long as they don't have long flowing fins. In a 10 gal I would recommend perhaps a school of 6 neon tetras or a 2 or 3 platies. (male or female would be fine with platies as they don't tend to breed as prolifically as guppies and the betta will likely eat most of the fry the produce)
Do not put Male Bettas in with any fish, except with a female if you are breeding. You can put a Black Mystery Snail, for it, that would be fine.
