1997 Grand Am Check Engine Light?

    No this is not caused by the extra weight. There is something wrong (minor or major) with your engine and you should take it to either a mechanic or to an auto store place (like Advance Auto, Oreilly's, AutoZone, etc etc) and let them run a diagnostic on your computer. May be nothing at all, and they can reset it to make the light go out, but at least you will know what caused the light to come on. Have a good day :)

I agree with Zenas Walter extra weight would not cause the check engine light to come on. It is just coincidence that it came on at that time. An auto parts store such as Advance or Auto Zone can can diagnose the problem for free.

A GM car with an illuminated "Service Engine Soon" light is pretty common. When you last put gas in, did you turn the car off? The computer gets confused if you don't turn off a car before pumping. You may be able to go to a Pep Boys or auto parts store that has a diagnostic computer, to find out where the problem lies.

needs oil/water/ ect the weight is only going to suck the gas mileage down .. make sure tires have air in them too

Probably just a coincidence, a check engine light is usually related to engine emission performane. Are there any other lights on?
