Answer:
I am actually particularly displeased with Comcast customer service as a general rule, so I can sympathize with what you're going through. The fact that your box itself seems to be having registration issues would generally point me in the direction of it having an error, not the television, but one thing you said did strike me as strange. As far as I can recall (It's been a while since I've owned one) the Comcast receives its feed in via the wall cable but then feeds out to the television through either RCA (composite) or component cables (sadly Comcast has yet to release an HDMI capable box). If this is, in fact, how you have it hooked up, then a conventional channel search and program would do you no good. Much like a DVD player, the TV must be set to the source input for the Comcast box (Input 1, Input 2, Component 1, Component 2, etc.) and then the actual channel changing and programming would be done in the box menu and with the box remote. It sounds like you more or less know what you're doing, so forgive me if this answer in any way insults your intelligence, but have you tried changing the input select on the television? Please, email me and let me know. If this doesn't fix your problem I'd like to try walking you through it further. On a side note, as a way to get back at Comcast for being so unhelpful, I have recently discovered that if you simply call Comcast, point out that they offer great deals for their new customers and nothing for their loyal ones, they will discount your rates. Just like that. I saved $36 a month for three months, and my sister saved $25 for a whole year! Just something that might ease the pain of this whole annoying ordeal...

You need to take your digital converter box down to the ComCast office and exchange it for a Hi-definition converter box. That's all it is. Cable TV is not transmitted via digital signal!
