What is a good job for someone with social anxiety?

What is a good job for someone with chronic depression and anxiety?

  • Someone very dear to me suffers from these mental health issues, and has has sporadic employment all his life. He is highly intelligent but tends to interpret direction or feedback as personal criticism. This feeds his anxiety and often results in physical symptoms. Hence, he is trapped in a cycle of underperformance/criticism/anxiety/underperformance/criticism...and so on. What sort of job might make allowances for his conditions, and what steps could he take to best manage future employment? (BTW, he is medicated. Without the meds, he'd be in bed and none of this would be an issue)

  • Answer:

One that will have consistency, predictability and few interactions with others.

Honestly, the most important thing is a supportive workplace. A family friend is a member of a law firm which has a whole bunch of people with varied needs traditionally regarded to be unsuitable for the industry (mental illnesses, several young children, verbal impediments, etc). It's pretty great, and they get less work done than your average firm might in a week, but they do their jobs well nevertheless. Unfortunately, it's kind of hard to identify workplaces which would be supportive! I think two things are really important: firstly, if he can, seeking long-term psychotherapy alongside the job hunt will help a great deal (personally, as someone with PTSD as well as mild depression and anxiety, the periods in my life when I have felt most in control of my life [even if that direction wasn't what I "should have" been doing like putting all my time toward good grades] have been the ones when I've had some sort of ongoing fortnightly or weekly counselling or psychotherapy), and I strongly, strongly recommend finding out if insurance or disability benefits or low-cost counselling are available for him. Secondly, the ability to work from home without major prior notice will no doubt be extremely valuable. Jobs which plain don't require much physical contact, especially with customers, will also be better than those which do. If he's sure he doesn't feel worse when the sun's not out (as is the case for me and lots of others), night shift work is exceptionally good for many depressed or anxious people, especially things like stocking shelves or doing inventory checks (esp. if he doesn't have much work experience - these roles tend to take anybody): it's work that's really relaxing to be able to focus on, pays reasonably well because of its hours, and tends to not involve dealing with anywhere near as many unreasonable people as working a day shift in a similar position does.

It's a long shot, because this person likely has issues that would make this solution also not successful, but being self-employed could side-step some of these issues.

Dear friend                    I want you to understand the fact that depression is a disease and how can we expect a deceased person to work. The priority should be given to restoration of your friend's health and not the job. I suggest you to help your friend by making him practice yoga followed by meditation.  It takes a few months for the improvement to become significant.  Do not worry at all about his performance at present  He is not well and he cannot perform well. Not just him any living form in the world cannot carry out its activities when it is not healthy and its quite natural. When he becomes mentally sound I bet you will envy him. Good Luck and wishing a fast recovery of your friend......
