Places to ride mountain bikes?

Luton? St Albans? Firstly, forget the answers that tell you to get in your car to go somewhere to ride. Go to your post office an buy an ordinance survey map of the area. You are looking for bridleways or byways or permissive tracks. Get a flat board and tie it to your handlebars. Fold the map so that the bit you are riding folds into an A4 plastic sheet. Place on the board, using elastic bands. Take a compass and snack bar and don't think about coming back until you have explored for at least 2 hrs. There are a few areas that are near your that are good for playing. Woburn woods springs to mind, just nip up the A5 one Sunday. You also have the Grand Union canal meandering its way to London right past Luton. Your allowed to ride it, so why not? Luton is a stones throw from Dunstable, or more to the point, the Downs. There is also Ivenhoe beacon and that range of hills. Lots of good chalk land, hills and wooded gulley's. In fact, the Aylesbury Vale runs for some miles South. Luck
