How to get high google page rank?

How do I get search engines (mainly Google) to rank my categories page higher than the actual content?

  • For exmaple. Searching Google for "site:" will yield the main page, followed up the categories(instead of questions/answers). How do I get a similar result for a website I'm developing?

  • Answer:

    Weight. You must have more weight on a category page than your content/product page. Weight can be generated by onpage content and inbound/outbound links (Among a host of many other ways). Breadcrumbs also identify to Google where the page is on the breadcrumb trail. Have the product/content page link back to the category page so that all the product pages share their weight with the category page. Ultimately, sometimes Google appears stuck on just showing one page over the other... no matter what you do.
