Can I get a job at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate?

How hard is it to get a job at an overseas Consulate or embassy?

  • Answer:

depends on which country's embassy you're asking about. if a us one, you have to be employed by the state dept, cia, or some fed agency that has employees in an overseas embassy. if for a foreign govt, you'd have to ask them.

I presume here that you are asking about US consulates and embassies. There are several different means to such work. Most embassy employees either work for the State Department or are local hires. You can join the US foreign service, you can be a foreign service specialist, or if you live in the country in question, you can sometimes get a job as a "local hire." You can also serve for a few months as a paid or unpaid intern, to get a feel for the work before you commit yourself. Here is the employment page for the State Department. Look at the center column. Other US government agencies often have offices in Embassies or consulates, as well: FBI, DEA, IRS, etc.
