It can be as little or much as you make it. A good minimum price to aim for for a standard route in inexpensive countries (South East Asia, India, the Middle East, East Europe) is probably about 15,000 American dollars per person. This can be further reduced with couch-surfing, WWOOFING, hitch-hiking, moving slowly and using amenities aimed at locals rather than travelers, and getting a job for a few months teaching English in Korea or picking fruit in Australia. For the trip you describe, prices will be significantly higher I suspect. This is because the more slowly you travel the cheaper the costs. Trying to cover as much ground as you're aiming to cover means you'll need to travel very quickly, use more expensive transportation or fly more often rather than overlanding and spend less time in each location and hit only the (generally more expensive) tourist destinations rather than having time to just relax. I would estimate offhand that a trip like you're planning, hitting up the major tourist destinations in each continent, would probably cost in the area of $30,000 - $40,000 per person at a minimum (it can be done for much more obviously.) What I would do is cut a few areas of the country out of your trip: pick the main 4-5 attractions you consider must-see and then plan your route around that. By cutting back on the actual travel you'll have more time at the destinations to really experience the different cultures rather than just rushing from place to place.

The world has changed and dramatically (economically speaking) over the past decade. Cheap...forget Europe, the Caribbeans, Alaska. The rest, hope someone can help you out with that one. Try searching the web for home exchanges during your travels. Good Luck!
