What is an urgent message?

What is the probability that a text message intended for a person A reaches him if I randomly text person X the same message, and ask him to forward it to the person he thinks the message is intended for, and ask all successive people to follow suit?

  • Let's say I have a message for Mr. Smith but I don't know his contact details. So, I send out a text to a random person say Person X "Hey, Mr. Smith, let's meet up for coffee. -If you're not the intended recipient of this messge forward the message to the person you believe it is intended to (or any other random person)" And supposing that all the persons involved therewith do not break the chain then what is the probabilty that the message would finally reach the intended recipient?

  • Answer:

If the guy is reachable by SMS, (Mr X) then, with probability 1.

P = 1 There are only a finite number of people with mobile phones, yet the sequence of forwarding it to the next person would go on forever. This ensures that at some time in the future your text must reach the intended recipient. This vaguely resembles a random walk in 1-dimension, but with a finite number of points.
