How are ovarian cysts treated?

How are ovarian cysts treated?

  • Answer:

I believe hysterectomies are generally reserved cancerous ovarian cysts. If you're cyst isn't cancerous and other treatments don't work, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery can be performed to remove the cyst. According to http://www.pearlwomenscenter.com/gynecology-services/ovarian-cysts.cfm, this procedure involves a laparoscope being inserted through a tiny incision in the abdomen. I'd bring both of these options up with your doctor.

Typically your doctor will decide on whether a cyst needs treatment or whether it can just be observed (by examination, usually with ultrasound) based on the size of the cyst, your age and related symptoms. Most small single cysts in younger women clear up on their own because they are usually a result of ovulation - a cyst forms where the egg is released. Treatment for cysts that are larger or that cause symptoms or have other signs that mean that closer examination is necessary varies. Some cysts can be drained with a needle through the skin using ultrasound to view the procedure. Others will be inspected and then drained laparoscopically with an instrument inserted through a small incision. Where cysts are the result of other conditions like endometriosis or PCOS, treatment will be targeted at those conditions. In those rare cases where a cyst is very large or thought to be a tumour, your doctor may suggest an operation which could include a hysterectomy or removal of the ovary or ovaries.

The ovarian cysts grow when the reproductive system of a woman is functioning normally and she is having her normal menstrual cycles. The ovaries produce follicles, one of which matures into an egg each month. The process occurs normally in most cases. In certain conditions these follicles do not rupture and rather turn into a fluid filled cyst. Other causes of ovarian cysts can be due to some dermoid reaction due to entrapment of hair follicle or sebum follicle. There could be cysts of corpus luteum origin.Symptoms of ovarian cyst Abdominal pain Pain during intercourse Weight gain Nausea and vomiting Fatigue and headache Fullness and heaviness in the abdomen Increased bowel movements due to pressure Increased frequency of urination Role of Ayurveda in Ovarian Cyst TreatmentAyurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine that makes use of herbs existing in the nature and formulates herbal remedies using the inherent power present in these herbs. Around 95% of the ovarian cysts are benign, means they are not cancerous. The treatment for the ovarian cysts depends on the size of the cyst and the symptoms. For small, asymptomatic cysts, the wait and see approach with regular check-ups will be most likely recommended. The pain causes by the ovarian cysts are treated with:1) A warm bath, hot water bottle or heating pad applied to the lower abdomen near the ovaries to relax tense muscles and relieve cramping, stimulate circulation, reduce discomfort and heal ovaries. All decisions must be discussed with a doctor. I'm not a doctor, but I will speak based on my personal experience with the syndrome. I was advised by three different gynecologists to take oral contraceptive pills to 'treat' policystic syndrome. I don't know the chemistry or the biology behind this, but might be true. I tried two different pills but couldn't adapt to the side effects. I discussed the options with my doctor and we've decided to give Mirena a try. It's a intrauterine system, and it releases synthetic hormone locally, not systemically like the oral pill. Thus, it doesn't 'treat' the policystic ovary, but it prevents a very bad thing from happening, something that is associated to this syndrome: endometrial cancer. Again, I don't know how it works on the details. The Mirena system won't prevent you from suffering with these painful cysts, but endometrial cancer is one more thing to look at. Discuss with your doctor the oral pills option, as it supposedly prevents both (policystic ovary and endometrial cancer). Don't take anything without medical orientation.

There is a difference of PCOS, usually it don't produce large cyst, and ins a lifetime condition that can be helped but not treated. In the case of other cysts they should be differentiated, because the etiologies are different and hence the treatment. A simple cyst can be aspirated with ultrasound guidance in office. A complex cyst should be studied because can be malignant. A cyst with blood can be endometriosis. Please tell us more about your case, and maybe images?
