Where are some really quaint inexpensive towns in England?

I am thinking about moving to england; does anyone know of inexpensive towns to live in near London?

There are so many great place's about an hour away from London where you would be able to get a great property at an inexpensive rate, Croydon is quite popular with a varied mix of people and night life!

Well, I know you can get places in Dollis Hill for about one hundred pounds a week. London is a wonderful city, although everyone is nasty, rude and unsociable. But then everywhere is like that - in the south-east at least.
