What can a volunteer do in a First Aid Hospital?

What is the best way to volunteer in medicine?

  • I'm 25 years old and I want to volunteer in medicine in developing countries. I'm especially interested in paramedics and surgery assistance, but I haven't any medical education and skills. As a matter of fact I've finished two-week first-aid course. Is it possible to finish some short-term medical course and volunteer after that? I'm really looking for advise from experienced people.

"but I haven't any medical education and skills" Then volunteering overseas, in healthcare, is out of reach for you. Sorry. Get that education and skills, and then you can. For instance, http://www.uniteforsight.org accepts volunteers who have medical training, but aren't doctors. But you MUST have that experience. There are many ways that you can volunteer. Do pick a decent charity. I used Global Volunteer Network which have partner charities worldwide. Have you ever thought about Rwanda? Read this... http://globetrotterguru.com/volunteer-rwanda/ I think it would be something that's right up your street!

If you cannot practice healthcare or things related to medicine in your own country then you cannot go to a developing country and practice healthcare. Just because they are developing does not mean they do not need qualified people doing medicine. People in developing countries still require a certain standard and that must be given. Especially if you are volunteering somewhere then a lot of the people who would be accessing you would be of lower income and not being able to afford or access proper healthcare so you must have qualifications. Check out Doctors without borders and see what they do and what qualifications you need to be able to work with them.

I have been a non medical volunteer for operation smile vietnam for a few years and had the honor to meet the co founder Dr Bill Mcgee. His speech inspired me a lot and aligned with my vision too. The organization helps bring back the smiles on those who suffer for free and it is moving to see their happiness every when a surgery is successful.
