What is Muay Thai?

What's the best Muay Thai gym to train in (Tiger Muay Thai gym? Fairtex?) and how is it like?

  • Answer:

Both are good choices w/ pros and cons. TMT, Phucket: they are probably the largest camp. They have good equipments and stuff.  Most importantly they teach everything and it's NOT mcdojo style BS. The thing is: there are too many people, and TMT sure is expensive. Fairtex Pattaya: all inclusive resort, obviously got great equipments. You get to run alongside with legends such as Yodsanklai. But still, it's pretty expensive. If you like unstructured training, try 13 coins. If you love highly regulated training, go to the notorious (in a good way) Sitsoonpeenong gym.

The best gyms in Thailand are not commercialised, and don't host many foreigners so that you get the train and spar with local Thai fighters, whom generally have stronger technique. Choosing a gym depends on many factors, such as the style of the gym and trainer, and the type of equipment. Most of the bigger gyms have a website in English, where you can see what a typical day involves. This, for example, is from Sor Vorapin: Morning 6.30 Wake Up !! 6.40 Warm up / Stretch 6.50 5-10-km. Jogging 7.20 Shadow Box & Drills 7.40 Bag Work 8.00 Pad Work 8.20 Clinching / Sparring 8.45 Cool Down Stretch 9.00 Shower 9.45 Breakfast Together Resting Period ! Afternoon 3.00 Warm Up / Stretch 3.20 2-km. Jogging 3.40 Skipping 3.55 Shadow Boxing 4.20 Bag Work 4.40 Pad Work 5.10 Clinching / Sparringl 5.40 Cool Down / Stretch 6.00 Shower 6.45 Dinner Together Best of luck in finding a gym! Training in Thailand was one of my most formative Muay Thai experiences.

It would depend on where you are. Here in Singapore, I train in Evolve and I'm enjoying every bit of it. I'd not done Martial Arts before and this was my first experience with Muay Thai. They've got great trainers - who have either been or are currently active fighters. What truly makes this a great place to train in goes much beyond their experience and titles - they are excellent instructors, they make an effort to understand each student's strengths and weaknesses and tailor their interaction appropriately. The focus is on technique of course, but also on strengthening your body, controlling your mind, getting the right amount of aggression in while sparring, and having fun while doing all of it.

Depends on what you looking for. Only Training? Or relaxing and chilling out? Are you focused on learn new stuff or just kick the pads and learn alone? Most of MT gyms nowadays are commercials and dont focus on foreigners, because they bring money without spending effort for them. Most of the gyms also organize matches and dont even pay you. Personally i trained in many many gyms in thailand but as far for now my favourite is 7 Muay Thai Gym near rayong city, because the co-owner is a a young Italian fighter: Mathias Gallo, who's a rock man, already trained with him at Sitsongpeenong gym, and now that he opened a gym he trains there and helps with the training. I like the fact the management of the gyms speaks good english and italian ofc apart from thai and spanish, and Mathiass father is a popular manager in thailand, if you want to fight he can easily promote you anywhere.
