Most cruise lines charge more like $7.99/minute for ship to shore calls, and cellular service all goes through a satellite provider called Cellular At Sea, which generally charges $2.49/minute. Thousands of parents of little ones leave them home and cruise. They either don't call, or they build the cost of the phone calls into their budget and don't whine about it.

Would it work to wait until you got into port? {considering you are in a port most days, and most of every day - - unless you need to say night-night to your children - then pay the 75 cents/minute.}

you call while in port using prepaid phone cards. at sea you have ONE option and it is spotty at best. your cell phone will be even MORE expensive as you get charged international roaming fees on top of whatever the cruise line charges. people are on VACATION and if you cannot go one day without calling home then why bother going in the first place?
