  • I want to get another horse kind of soon, but I want a younger one that I work with, but I also want to be able to jump. What age is safe to start jmuping a horse at? I realize there ...show more

  • Answer:

An OTTB can make a great jumper but they can also have loads of problems that can be difficult. They have to be mentally ok for the work as well as physically. I would not try it without an experienced trainer that has taken a horse from the track to the show ring. I would give and OTTB about 6 months to detox and veg in the pasture before starting training. My friends father flipps OTTB for a living and he lets everyone sit in the pasture for a year to help calm them down and allow them to just be horses. The vast majority of his horses take to training faster and are solid minded at a younger age. They are so much fun to work with as opposed to my own OTTB whos origional trainer put him straight into training. At 8 years old he still acted like a 3 year old and was really immature. I was forced (family issues) to give him 4 months off shortly after buying him and he was a different horse. Much calmer and more willing to focus during training. One of my friends had the same experience with her horse. She was an OTTB whose owner was really busy in school so she wasn't ridden anymore than the occasional trail for 3 months. Now she has been put back into work and mentally is much sounder. I cannot recommend mental breaks for OTTBs enough. I would not start jumping at all until 5 and nothing of height until 6. 4 at the youngest. Any sooner than that, and they may have to get joint injections when they are older to keep them sound. Some horses don't fully mature until around 5 years old, so even at 4 I would be careful not to push the horse too hard. Sure, OTTB's (Off the Track Thoroughbred's---Even though you probably knew what that stood for lol) can make great jumpers. If you have been riding for 8 years you can definitely handle a TB. But be sure to get a vet check on any horse that you decide to get off the track, because they may not have soundness problems now, but they may show up in the future. I hope this helps!

I would start the horse over fences without a saddle or any weight on his back at around 5-6 years old. Jumping too soon can damage muscles and joints. I would wait until he was 7 to get on and jump. I know it sounds like a long time to wait but you will get more years out of your horse this way. If you are considering an OTTB, I would recommend lots of flat before jumping, just to teach that this is not the racetrack and they don't need to run. TB's are great horses - my only issue with them is they are more delicately built and are prone to going lame easier... I feel like I should keep mine in bubble wrap so he doesn't hurt himself! Good luck!

I would say that you can start them on REALLY little jumps about 5ish, but don't start like full, large jumps until about 6-8 when they are mature. I'd say yes, an OTTB would be perfectly fine for jumping, TB's are great jumpers. I ride a TB, and he was off the track about 10 or so years ago (He's 15) and he's a lovely jumper. As far as wanting to work with them, again, I wouldn't start jumping until about 6ish, but I'd totally work on getting them used to the jumping, poles, raised poles, ect. :D Goodluck.

i think at age five their legs and muscles are fully developed. i would wait until then but you probably could jump a two or three year old but not too much. yeah i think tb would be great to jump. as long as you have a vet check him over for any injuries from racing. you should have a vet check your horse either way in case they are too young to jump without hurting themselves. good luck!

i wouldnt jump a horse until at least 5 years old. as for making a race horse a jumper that is perfectly fine, you can do it with a TB a QH and even a STB. actually there is a lot of people beginning to do jumping, cross country, barrels, and even dressage with standardbred race horses. 80 percent of them are a dream to work wit, talented athletes and they come in all shapes and sizes. weather you choose TB QH or STB racehorse you can adopt sound ones for really really cheap and give a horse a new job, lifestyle, and possibly save him/her from going to slaughter. which is a very big and respectable thing. so good luck and i hope you find the horse you are looking for.

It can depend on the breed, TBs are not matured until 4. OTTBs can be amazing jumpers.

i would recommend not jumping a horse until it is 3 or 4 at least, you really want to be make sure that the horse is fully developed before you jump it because jumping can put a lot of stress on joints, an off the track thoroughbred could be a good jumper, it would really depend on the horse, thoroughbreds usually are favorable for jumping because they have the speed and height that is necessary for the sport, you also might be able to get an ex-racer for cheaper

no sooner than 6 years old. horses joints do not fully mature until they are between 6 and 8 years of age. many ottb's are excellent jumpers.

A safe age for a horse to start jumping is when they are 3 or 4. That way there bones are pretty much done developing and they've already had there basis of training.....I would not recommend an ex-racer...I have had 2 of them, and they have been extremely hot horses....However, it really depends. You could find a totally sane ex-racer, and it could be different. But from my past experiences, ex-racers are a little crazier than most horses
