Ear plaque treatment?

  • I just rescued this horse, he came in with ear plaque, im not familiar with this at all, hes being quarantine for a month, but is it catch-able to horses? What can I do to treat it? ...show more

  • Answer:

My horse has a plaque too. Our vet said that while you can remove it surgically, they often grow back and are only cosmetic anyway. They aren't "catch-able" as you put it. They apparently don't normally hurt but my horse also is very adverse to having me touch that particular ear. He is a huge wimp though. My guess is that since you rescued the horse, its not the plaques that bother him when you touch his ears. I think he's probably head shy. Many horses will allow you to tough their lower face, but will NEVER let you touch their ears.
