  Would depend where you are! Typically state or federal laws protect wetlands. There are internationally protected wetlands (managed by the federal govt) and state protected wetlands (managed by the state). The case in Australia anyway. In Western Australia buffers are required from wetlands (ranges from 30 to 50m). In these buffers rehabilitation work is also required. No negative impacts, such as untreated drainage outfall is allowed to impinge on the wetland. A wetland management plan may be required to be prepared and instigated at development (requiring state approval), this may include strategies such as physical barriers, soil amelioration, revegetation, weed control, fencing, directing treated water to the wetland, etc etc
