How To Accompany On Piano?

I am can play piano pretty darn good, but when asked to accompany I freak?

  • And stare at the notes like I've never seen a grand staff before. What is going on? I'm a piano minor for Merlin's sake. This shouldn't be happening.

    Oh, but it is. Welcome to the neurotic musicians club: I'm a charter member. Who can explain such a phenomenon? Perhaps a clinical psychologist; but doubt if the person suffering from such a malady would understand their explanation. I use to suffer terrible stage fright; I really don't know if there is a remedy. On second thought, would you consider a professional analysis? I think it happens to a lot of us. (well, you all ... I can't sight read to start with.) There are just some situations where there is a disconnect between what we know we can do and the accomplishment of that task. I've taken to memorizing hymns during the week so that I don't look like the complete buffoon on Sunday mornings. Invariably I'll be playing along something quite common and go completely blank when staring at the music. Quite a trick when that happens in the fourth or fifth stanza ... and t'ain't nothin' easier than four part harmony. So I've come to rely on muscle memory. ... I should go back and take lessons -- two or three years worth thirty-five years ago apparently wasn't quite enough. Edit for Alberich. I used to come close to passing out when faced with an audience ... now it doesn't phase me at all. And I don't know exactly when that changed.
