How do i write a proper resume?

I am about to be 17 years old, and applying for a few jobs (i.e.-Target, PacSun, and a local milkshake shop). But I am not sure what kind of information I should put in my resume.

Answer:
If you have little or no resume-writing experience, and if you're *competing* with other applicants, you should consider getting your resume done by a resume writing service. There are quite a few. Best (and cheapest) one I know is http://www.flatrateresumes.com

Write a minimalist, skills based resume since you have not much experience. Emphasizing your volunteer work and academic achievements

Here's a good site: http://www.free-resume-help.com to help you create a resume. A good basic format, though, is to start with your contact information, then go on to an objective (optional), then education & work history (any jobs or volunteer experience), then any awards, honors and such you've received and any references you have (if you have room for the references, that's great, if not write "references available upon request").

Go to resume.com for assistance, but I presume you have not had that many jobs as these companies are aware. Just fill out the application and be precise include school activities and any clubs, charity work you have done etc.... Also ask for the store manager and speak to him or her personally as they get 100s of applications per week from kids just like you. I was a Walgreen Store Manager and believe me when a young person came to me personally and with confidence it went along way, and if you don't hear from that person right away come back and ask for them again and I think you will find that your efforts will pay off. Good Luck

If you have no job experience than write a letter instead stating how you would be an asset to the company. State that you know how critical customer service is for the company you are applying for and let them know that you are the person for the job because.....(you fill in) Even if you just did babysitting or lawn cutting jobs for neighbors, get some references. Someone who knows you are a hard and conscientious worker. If you have excellent grades in high school, let them know about it. Awards? Let them know. Goals? Ditto. The letter will you show you are ambitious, articulate, and willing to be an asset to the company. Good luck. Oh, and please dress up conservatively and nicely at the interview and don't be late.

Besides setting all margins to 1", the most important criteria for setting up a professional resume besides relevant text, is "scanability." Here are some helpful tips: 1. Place just below your identification header [your hame, address, phone, email address] any Conditional Warning Statement such as "Confidential Resume,"Do Not Contact Current Employer," etc. 2. Always fill-in an Objectives category [just below the Conditional Warning Statement] and make sure that he Objective will contribute to the profitability of your future employer; 3. Select a mono-type font such as Helvetica, Arial, Courier or Times Roman; do not select any cursive handwriting styles which cannot scanned; 4. Keep font sizes within a range of 10 to 12 pts.; 5. Avoid styling text with a justified alignment, keep it flushed left; 6. Instead of using tabs to set up blocked text entries, generate a table and use the column and row settings accordingly; 7. Do not place an i.d. picture anywhere on the resume, this is a major taboo due to discrimination issues; 8. Do not place any graphic text [saved as .gifs] onto the resume since it may be overlooked during the scanning phase; 9. List at the very end of the resume your interests which should include travel experiences, language skills, social interactions such as golf, team sports, tennis, etc. In conclusion, the above helpful hints were designed to allow ease of scanning of your resume into PDF which can then be text captured for seach purposes by your potential employer. If the original resume was created in Word, WordPerfect or Mac Appleworks, it can be Saved As a PDF file which then can be saved as an email attachment. Otherwise, you can simply use a scanner and scan a hard copy of the resume and then save as a PDF file. Failure to conform the resume to appropriate fonts and styles as outlined above will result in rejection of the resume simply due to the inability of the scanning device to properly index relevant resume entries. Good luck!
