Becoming an NP while already an RN?

How long does does a nurse have to be an rn before going for NP?

  • I want to become a nurse practitioner, but I heard in order to do so, I must become a RN first. How long do I have to be an RN, before going for NP? Can it be like a year or so? Thanks

  • Answer:

You do not need to practice as a nurse before being a nurse practitioner but you must be licenced as a nurse. To be an NP you need to complete a master's program so you will need a bachelors on nursing or another area if the program allows for this. good luck!

It depends on the school. In most cases, it is just 1 or 2 years. I know to be a CRNA it is 1 year at some schools and 2 at others. Some applicants have more years under their belts, but usually the minimum is 1 year. I would try to get into a good school that only requires 1 year experience. Hope I have helped.

I believe to be a NP or APN you need a masters degree in nursing.
