Why do health-care and medical workers use medical terminology instead of standard english words?

    The words are very specific and can get all who know them to the same page at the same time. If you need to know what they are talking about, ask, they will put the words into layman terms. If a mechanic asked for that wrench thingy over there, would you know exactly which one? No. But if he/ she said, hand me the 9/16 open end wrench and you knew something about tools, you would know which one to get. Same goes for the medical field. Just different terms.

Well, because they're trained that way, and because sometimes it's more specific. I mean colitis would be a lot more specific than "the runs," for example. It would point to a condition that's ongoing, etc. But mostly I do think it's because that's how they're trained. When you speak a certain way every day, you begin to talk that way even in casual conversation.

they should not do this. they should use language everyone can understand. for example they should use the word "night" and not "nocte". they should say "three times a day" and not "tds".
