Where to find non profit salaries?

Is it appropriate to negotiate salaries on job offers from non-profit institutions?

  • Suppose you are being considered for a position within a non-profit NOT in administration/facilities/support, but in a role that directly serves the organization's mission. They recruited you via a reference from a colleague, you did not apply for the position. Is it ethically appropriate to negotiate a higher salary ? I say 'ethically' because this is a non-profit organization. Wouldn't the moral imperative be to devote as much resources to their mission rather than padding salaries (provided they are offering a 'livable' salary). EDITED: I removed references to academia but wanted to consider other non-profits outside that realm as well.

  • Answer:

Yes it's ethically appropriate.  The fact that a university is "non-profit" means that they can't give money to shareholders.  Universities are billion dollar institutions, and they can afford these sorts of things. Any ethical qualms you may have in demanding a higher salary are likely to disappear once you find out how much the football coach makes or how much professors in the business and economics department makes.  If you don't demand your fair share, its going to end up in the pockets of the football team. If it still bothers you then demand a big salary and then donate it to the charity of your choice.

I've never applied for an academic job, but my wife is a professor and when she applied, it was not only expected that she negotiate, but it was actively encouraged (e.g., "Come prepared to negotiate").  That said, negotiation isn't always (just) over salaries, and in academia may instead relate to tenure clock (if it's a tenure position), course load/releases, ancillary responsibilities, number of teaching assistants or graders, sabbaticals, travel funding, summer funding, advisory load, student funding, etc.  In my wife's case, at least, those factors were far more important to her than her base salary.
