From what you wrote, you would probably have a pretty good chance. How good a chance probably depends on how many officers they intend to hire, how many other qualified candidates apply, how good you are at taking tests and how well you do during interviews, and how your background is. Computer technology is a great degree to have. I would focus on that, and maybe just take a couple criminal justice classes if you want to. Many people would suggest choosing a major other than criminal justice. Whatever major you choose, get the highest grade point average that you can. Best of luck!

Since you are on good relations with the department ask them. See if they use a hiring board system and find out what those people think is important. many non professionals really think CJ has something to do with police work. I really have never worked with departments with less than 100 officers so I cannot advise on really small departments. I can tell you that for medium to large departments most do not care what your degree is in. I never recommend criminal justice. it has almost nothing to do with police work. It is also way to limiting for police. Police are the last of the generalists. to be a good and successful cop you need to know a little about a lot and understand how to access what you need. Even more important are your logic and critical thinking skills. Computer science will help you practically and with your logic skills. CJ will not help any of that stuff. I suggest you leave you minor open to liberal arts. Intro philosophy, some psych, soc, writing and public speaking classes will go a long way with improving your performance as a cop and helping you get ahead.
