What are some free tennis courts in New York City?

I am a student and I love playing tennis. But, I am priced out of my desire to play my favorite sport in this city. You need to purchase $200 tennis permit just to play tennis. For a student, playing tennis in NY is outrageously expensive. It is a shame that a city that is so concerned about its citizen's health so as to ban sodas cannot make a universal sport accessible to its residents. So, I am looking to find some hidden gems where you can play without burning a hole in my pocket. I prefer the location to be in either Queens or Manhattan.

Sorry for not answering your question, but here in Santa Clara, California, basically all public parks have tennis courts free of charge and it's not too hard to find a vacant court. Not sure if the situation is different there or if you are looking for a serviced court (indoors, AC, classes). Some clarification would be appreciated.
