Noxema is always good....also, fresh brewed iced tea (believe it or not) patted on the burned area.

I've lived through many a sunburn. Nothing releives the pain totally. I too have always found Solarcaine to not be very effective. Try applying vinegar on his back, or soaking in a tub with about a quart of vinegar added to the bath water. It helps releive the pain and take some of the itch out. If he is not going to be laying down for a while and can go with out a shirt, applying Noxema to the burn once the skin is dry actually works very well. I have red hair and have used it on my face many many times. Taking Ibuprofen will help with the pain as well as any swelling. It may not look swelled, but with any burn there is always some swelling and the Ibuprofen works well. Another option is applyin fresh aloe vera.

be careful with what you put on, if it has oil in it (oil based) it will make the burn worse. aloe vera with lidocain usually does the trick.

I've heard that vinegar helps pull the burn out. You can just apply it with a cotton ball.
