Why do I have a learning disability?

Why Isn't Autism Considered A Learning Disability?

  • I heard autism is not considered a learning disability. Why not? Doesn't it impair the ability to learn social cues?

  • Answer:

There is a lot of misunderstanding about learning disability. A learning disability refers to a specific impediment to learning that does not have an effect on intelligence. Dyslexia, Dsycalculia, Specific Reading disability, dysgraphia, etc. It is different than an intellectual disability which causes a person to take longer to learn, BUT they continue to learn throughout their lifetime. Autism because it's cause is not well understood is a developmental disability and is thought to be neurologically based. Although you do learn social cues, social cues are more a matter of intuition than learning and it is this intuition that people with autism seem to lack. If autism were simply a matter of learning social cues there would be very simply solution to remedy to the issues related to autism.

It isn't strictly a learning disability, it's classed more of a behavioural problem although their learning in some cases can be impaired. A child or young adult can still be awarded a statement for learning where they can get extra help whilst in a learning environment if they're diagnosed with Autism.
