Planning a family camping trip in August 2008. Does anyone know of any good campsites in California?

There are a LOT of places to camp in California. Where do you want to go? Southern CA or Northern CA? The area around Lake Shasta is very nice and has a lot of things to do.

My daughter and I camped in the Los Angeles National Forest north of Los Angeles the summer of 2006. I was totaly surprised to find such a remote area with so few campers so close to such a large city. It was great. We saw several deer as well as a grizzly bear. I wasn't quite sure what kind of bear it was until I saw what looked like the same exact bear at a Cabela's and had to go read the plaque to find out what kind it was. It ran off as soon as it spotted us. There were lots of little lizards around (the kids would love trying to catch them, we couldn't catch any but it was fun trying).
