  • Answer:

Wilderness areas typically do not require a permit. In National Parks, use may be high in volume, so backcountry offices exist to restrict access and ensure that users follow regulations governing the area. I avoid National Parks and go to National Forests whenever possible because the Department of Interior usually creates more permit requirements, while the Department of Agriculture manages such extensive lands that backcountry regulation is not as much hassle. The Olympic Peninsula is nice. But be careful; you wouldn't think people could get lost there but it is common. Otherwise, Chris is right.

You do not need a permit for 99% camping in wilderness areas in the U.S. The only Wilderness areas that require a permit are places that get really heavy use. Wilderness areas are either managed by the National Park Service, the Forest Service, or the Bureau of Land Management. You will need to check with the local ranger district to see if any permit is required.
