What is an IT Analyst?

What skills can a equity research analyst use as a private equity analyst and what skills would they need to learn?

  • This is a follow up to:   I'm a equity analyst who is considering going into PE, what skills should I highlight and what skills do I need to acquire if I went from a technology role to equity analyst?  Would no Ibanking/m&a experience kill me or are there any skills I can use from working at a large mutual fund that would be transferable? The PE fund does distressed investing.

  • Answer:

As per me, the most important skills are: a) Sound valuation skills.- Valuing companies with different approaches is a fundamental skill which a PE analyst should have. Companies in different sectors are valued differently. A Startup Pharma company will be valued with a different apporach compared to a large utility company. Hence learn to value different types of companies. Good valuation skills are all the more important for Distressed Investing. A grasp of value investing also helps. b) Gain a good grasp of industry trends- Preferably focus on a specific industry. a) Writing Good Reports - As important as valuation and analysis
