Why wont the messenger service in my laptop work for msn messenger?

These kind of third party messengers will only usually except the older style MSN accounts and not the new Windows Live accounts, i had the same problem when i was using pidgeon on Ubuntu. You can try using one of the online based messengers rather then the program pre-installed. iloveim.com is pretty good!

Download the latest Windows Live Messenger (formally known as msn) at: http://get.live.com/WL/config_all for the available stable version. Of if you want to try the next generation of messenger (i say its the best version yet :-) ) got to http://download.live.com/messenger Now thats how to get Windows Live Messenger working. Or it could be the servers problem, that normally occurs once and a while, I normally wait till 2 hours and then it starts working again. Or Disconnect from the internet and connect it back.... it helps actually sign you in. Restart your wireless router if u owe one, that normally gets the internet working and running smooth. But your getting "Our protocol is not supported by the server" so you've got to at least download the official version of Windows Live Messenger, that should fix your problem :-) lets see if that helps.
