How much does a world class Web developer make in Latin America? And where can a world class web developer find jobs in L.A.?
-
I got a CS degree, worked in web projects using RoR, Play Framework and have a really good grasp on algorithms, design patterns, etc. I am not sure if I am, but at least I strive to become world class and I work constantly on improving my skills. Yet I have struggled to find an appropirate job in Latin America after returning home from my studies. Where are the tech jobs in Latin America? Or are there any? What are some advice you could provide for this situation? All I have been able to find are very low pay boring corporate jobs. Is this the only thing I can expect to find?

Answer:
I will talk about my experience in Chile. I think you have 3 paths, one is corporate business, telcompanies, retail, banks, etc, they have big structures and web implementations, most of them out of the box solutions and some time custom made. Tech experts in corporate business can earn I will say 50K-60K plus taxes insurances, etc. but not much more. If you want more you need to move to IT management on corporate business. Then you have startups, where you can earn 40K 30K but if you are part of the core of the team (and if you are a world class Web developer you should be a core part of the team) you can get stocks so you can get a lot of money if you pick the right startup. Also you have some I&D stuff related to Universities and international research centers, were you can earn may be more than a corporate business, but are really hard to get and most of the time you develop skills than nobody needs. If you are young and can afford to invest, I will recommend to try to join a Startup, if you like Chile, check out Startup Chile, there are a lot of good startups looking for talent.

you can also freelance. in my experience if you are good enough you can earn 50-75 usd / hour depending on the country / contractor you're working with. I have been working as a freelancer for international clients all over the world from chile since 2010 and i have a large client base of incredible design and development companies that use my skills. one of the main advantages of living in chile is that you can get more from your money since its a cheap country to live in. the main advantage is you can get really different tasks and complex problems to solve and every new project will be different, so you never get bored
